A little bit of DOUGLAS ROAD history, as I have found it...

Our DRW  AREA and WORSLEY, HAZELHURST, and a little bit of its HISTORY.

Douglas Road in Worsley, Manchester, was primarily developed during the interwar and mid-20th-century period, with most of its residential properties constructed between 1912 and 1949.

Street Overview & History

  • Location: Situated in the residential area of Worsley within the City of Salford metropolitan borough.

  •

  • Housing: Comprises early-century and mid-century semi-detached residential houses.

  •

  • Development Era: Property and architectural data profiles indicate the initial core of houses on the street was built around the 1920s to 1930s (early-century phase), followed by additional semi-detached builds extending into the late 1940s post-war window.

  •

  • Local Context: The surrounding Worsley region transitioned from a historic coal-mining and landed estate economy (historically tied to the Egerton family and the Bridgewater Estates) into a suburban residential community.

  •

Worsley originated as a small medieval settlement and was first recorded in 1195 as Workesley.

The historic core of the village as an industrial and residential area was mainly built during the late 18th century (around 1759-1761), coinciding with the construction of the Bridgewater Canal by the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater. Further expansion, including its distinctive Tudor-style estate architecture, took place during the 19th century under the Earls of Ellesmere, with later modern suburban housing added after the World Wars.
